Arche Age – The Best New Sandbox MMO in 2014 - Where Have You Sailed?

Arche Age – Everything You Want in a Sandbox MMO

Sandbox massive multiplayer online games have been up and coming for years now, yet not one has been able to provide gamers with everything needed in this game version. From games like Elder Scrolls Online and Mortal Online there have been too many bugs, missing abilities and game breaking features.  Sandbox MMO's need to give gamers absolute freedom with choices of player progression, customization, exploring and of course player owned custom buildings.

Fortunately game developers in South Korea have created a game that has all of these aspects that every gamer longs for in their sandbox MMO. Arche Age which was developed and created by Trion Worlds, was released in the Asian Pacific in January of 2013, and is now in North America and Europe. After seeing game play from the original version of the game released in only Asian Pacific languages, there was so much demand from the English community for a game of this caliber that Trion Worlds created an English version set to release on September 12th 2014, bringing the next best MMO to English markets.

Arche Age is currently in open beta for all owners of Glyph gaming engine to try out, however all servers will be wiped prior to the release date. During my experience in the beta (which was only up to level 10 out of 50 levels), I was able to run swim and even fly freely, use a boat, horse and abilities to travel quickly, craft weapons, items and even a house for a fellow gamer. The player versus environment and player versus player battles have all the aspects of what World of Warcraft was known for with even more diverse abilities. After talking with various end game players that have played the closed alpha, they were able to attest to the wide variety of skills and abilities to morph in your skill tree. As well as an abundance of secondary crafting skills that give the game so much playability with so many different avenues of expertise to explore. These range from farming, gathering, weapon and armour crafting, building, potion making and much more. The PVP in Arche Age can range from you seeking out battles in vast contested areas, to running into raids (large enemy force), and my favorite, running into pirates while at sea. Yes this game comes complete with galleys, cannons and scurvy, players can choose the life of a pirate, taking other players ships and lives at sea, something no other game has been able to achieve on such a large scale.

So to all my fellow gamers and sandbox MMO enthusiasts, I recommend that you try Arche Age out come release on September 12th 2014. You will not be disappointed by the vast amount of things to do and places to see, and of course gold to be plundered.

Destiny - The Best MMO Console Game Has Arrived

Destiny - Most Successful New Gaming Franchise

What is Your Destiny?

After 10 years of publishing, Activision and Bungie have finally released the fabled console game Destiny on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 on September 9th 2014. Activision best known for Call of Duty franchise and Bungie with the Halo franchise, have created a game that every console gamer has always wanted. This MMO console game has seamless PVP and PVE as well as all the customizations that come with this caliber of game. This 700 million dollar project by two of the best console game developers has genuinely created a game that everyone can enjoy together.

With songs by Paul McCartney and voices by Peter Dinklage (HBO’s Game of Thrones Tyrion Lannister) the developers have effectively “thrown the kitchen sink” at this one. On September 10, 2014 Activision announced that the game has shipped 500 million dollars in Destiny games, claiming that Destiny is the most successful new gaming franchise. However, this does not cover both of the company’s expenses; they have also released an expansion worth 35 dollars Canadian. With that in mind, if every person that purchases the game gets the expansion, the game will be very profitable.

Destiny’s gaming experience is unlike any other console game to date. With online multiplayer, maps that reminisce the Halo franchise, and all the customization that comes with the Call of Duty franchise; the game provides consumers with boundless gameplay opportunities. Players begin their journey on the Tower; an alien construct which was created by the Traveller. The Traveler, is an alien construct that spurred human technology on Mars, The Moon and beyond the solar system. Unfortunately, an entity known as the Darkness destroyed much of the human race leaving the Traveler to sacrifice itself to save the last of Humanity. As a Guardian, you are a being that has absorbed the Traveler’s energy and can use special abilities. The three main classes are the Hunter, Titan and Warlock which are effectively the well-known Archer, Warrior and Mage in classic MMO PC games. These three classes have a range of special powers, such as the Hunter’s triple kill ability, Titan’s slam and the Warlock’s energy ball. From the Tower players begin their PVE fight on Earth in apocalyptic Russia, The Moon, Mars, Venus and the Reef. The end game consists of teaming up with other players to PVE in the Vanguard or joining the Crucible to PVP, the online battlegrounds in Destiny. Here players test their skill against opponents on a range of maps spanning across the solar system and beyond.

Review

Personally,  I found the PVE in this game quite entertaining but only in a thriller sense with the landscapes and battles that took place, and all those freaky aliens. Unfortunately, I did not find the story too appealing, due to the fact there was not enough emphasis placed specifically on this. For a game that took ten years to create, it looks like the story only took one. Fortunately, the voice acting by Peter Dinklage does compensate somewhat, being a fan of Game of Thrones I enjoyed the parts with his robot character. Personally, I am a PVP player at heart and this game has the best PVP on a console game in a long time, the battles are fast and unpredictable with different abilities being used by every player. There are a couple ability combos that are being abused and the developers do need to nerf them a bit, such as the Titans slam and shield combo. For anyone that plays Call of Duty, the games were kind of getting old when looking at story and gameplay aspects, so this is a very nice change.

All in all, I enjoy Destiny and will continue playing it, and I definitely recommend it to anyone that misses a good old console shooter, and loves their MMO’s.
